Tamerlano
Josef Mysliveček
Tamerlano
A story from distant lands and times in a masterful opera by the “divine Czech.” Josef Mysliveček once captivated Italy—now, one of his operas arrives in Plzeň for the very first time.
In his own era, the music of Josef Mysliveček thrilled Italian audiences, who knew this Prague-born composer as Il Boemo. He even inspired Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and in recent years his works have been rediscovered by opera lovers worldwide. Mysliveček wrote exclusively in the supreme Baroque genre of opera seria, drawing on historical, exotic, or mythological subjects and offering singers a chance for dazzling virtuosity.
His work, originally titled Il gran Tamerlano, premiered in Milan in 1772 as part of the annual carnival season. Set in the medieval Ottoman Empire, this tale of desire—and the power to renounce it—became one of the most frequently performed operas of its time. With Tamerlano, Josef Mysliveček now takes the stage of the Plzeň theatre for the very first time.
