FIRE
One of today's most important playwrights, Roland Schimmelpfennig, uses his poetic, rhythmic and figurative language to tell archetypal parables of blessed and cursed lives.
The fairy-tale-like peaceful coexistence of two villages separated by a bridge over a stream turns into mutual hostility. One village is plagued by disasters (heat, drought, floods, fevers, fires), while the other one avoids disasters and misfortunes. The former is increasingly helpless and despairing while the latter lives in prosperity and its wealth flourishes. Thus the two formerly friendly villages grow humanly distant from each other, and social coldness instead of solidarity is gradually felt from the richer shores. The creek becomes a wide river, the land becomes more and more dispersed. The wooden bridge collapses. The water can no longer be crossed or swum across. But those on the miserable shore want to get to the happier one. But there, a barbed-wire fence is already being built against them. However, one night, a big fire forces them all onto a lifeboat. At dawn, they cannot see the other shore, they are alone in the middle of the open sea... Will the two who have loved each other since they were young, but whose lives have been separated by the current, at least get back together?
The play was commissioned by the National Theatre Mannheim, where it had its world premiere in January 2017.
