The Secret Marriage
Domenico Cimarosa
The Secret Marriage
Mozart and Rossini were not the only masters of comic opera of their time! Domenico Cimarosa, a composer associated with Naples in Italy, spent most of his life composing in the opera buffa genre. His *The Secret Marriage* premiered in 1792, not long after Mozart’s death, in Vienna in the presence of Emperor Leopold II.
The opera made such an impression on the Viennese audience at its premiere that, on the Emperor’s orders, the entire performance had to be repeated that very same evening. In the Czech lands, Cimarosa’s work remained largely overlooked for a long time, and so, after more than 160 years of the Pilsen Theatre’s history, we are staging this gem of the operatic comedy genre for the very first time. The opera company will thus continue its successful series of performances with which it regularly represents the Pilsen Theatre at the Musica Bayreuth festival.
