Boris Godunov
Modest Musorgskij
Boris Godunov
This operatic epic takes us back to a time when, following the death of Ivan the Terrible, Tsar of All Russia, the country found itself in a climate of power struggles and widespread chaos. The theme of one of the most evocative works in the world repertoire is the lust for power, which does not shy away from shameless manipulation of the masses or the shedding of blood.
The power of the story is enhanced by Mussorgsky’s visionary music, which has undergone numerous revisions to better conform to the operatic conventions of its time. Our production, however, is based on the composer’s original intention to present Boris Godunov as a musical drama, one whose universal appeal speaks to today’s audience with the same urgency as it did at the time of its creation.
