Josef Kajetán Tyl

The Strakonice Bagpiper

One of Tyl’s most charming and enchanting plays, about the wildness of youth and the power of love. About stubbornness and selfishness, which can blind not only the eyes but also the heart. About how no one is a prophet in their own land, and how you recognise a friend in times of need – you just mustn’t overlook them!

And that spells and magic do not always guarantee success, let alone happiness.

Švanda the bagpiper has a quick temper: he gets excited quickly, gets angry quickly, and slams the door even more quickly. He’ll happily leave his beloved Dorotka at home and set off into the world in search of recognition and money. But when fame goes to his head – just as the heat of midday can make one’s head spin – a steep fall follows. His wounded pride leads him astray amongst the noon maidens and forest nymphs. Yet the path back to his loved ones leads only via Gallows Hill. Will the enchanted bagpipes that once brought Švanda fame save him? Or will it be Dorotka and her love, which is often stronger than all the adversities of the world? This production is being staged as part of the Tyl anniversary celebrations as a return to the author who laid the foundations of Czech theatre, whilst also continuing the dramaturgical tradition of Czech classics, within which we staged a successful production of Radúz and Mahulena in 2023.
