When Puccini’s masterful musical adaptation of Murger’s play *Scenes from Bohemian Life* premiered at the Teatro Regio in Turin in 1896, it was clear that the opera would become an immortal part of the repertoire of theaters around the world.
This work, which cemented the triumph of Italian verismo, tells the love story of young people struggling to make ends meet against the backdrop of the artistic scene in 19th-century Paris. Puccini found an apt musical expression for this realistic theme, which, in addition to social criticism, is rich in inner emotions—whether in intimate scenes or in crowd scenes set on the streets of Paris. The powerful story of the love affair between two kindred spirits—the painter Rodolfo and the seamstress Mimi—inspired not only Puccini but also Ruggero Leoncavallo to create an operatic adaptation. However, Puccini’s *La Bohème* far surpassed Leoncavallo’s in both quality and popularity.
