The name of composer Zdeněk Lukáš has long been associated with Pilsen, where he worked for many years as a radio editor, choir director, and composer. The local environment had a profound influence on his artistic work. It is no exaggeration to say that he is the most frequently performed composer of the second half of the 20th century associated with our city.
Few of his more than 300 works have not been performed to this day. One of them is the full-length opera *Falkenštejn*, which he wrote in 1985 to a libretto by Dagmar Ledečová and which has been awaiting its premiere ever since.
In this historical fresco, which tells the story of the nobleman Záviš of Falkenštejn—a defender of Czech sovereignty and a complex figure—Lukáš demonstrated the full extent of his talent as an opera composer. His lifelong interest in choral composition and working with the human voice is most evident in this opera, which also draws unmistakable inspiration from Czech folklore.
Following *Veta za vetu*, which premiered in Plzeň in 1999, this is Zdeněk Lukáš’s second full-length opera, which we are presenting in an exclusive world premiere.
