Hercules And The Augean Stables

Friedrich Dürrenmatt

A modern satirical comedy inspired by an ancient motif about the fifth of the twelve famous works of Hercules - the cleaning of the Augean stables. The world is so ‘full of muck’ that even the greatest of the Greek heroes, Hercules, cannot clean it up...

The Swiss playwright Friedrich Dürrenmatt is one of the most disturbing authors of the 20th century. In his plays, he poses urgent existential questions - what is democracy, homeland, heroism, justice, responsibility for the world in which we live. He does not imitate reality, but he juggles it with imagination and playfulness within wide-open boundaries. The grotesque comedy Hercules And The Augean Stables had its successful premiere at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich in 1963.

Premiere on 12 December 2020 at the Grand Theatre
